Objectives

Enable seamless BLE connectivity and optimize power management for the client’s Smart Connect product line.

03

Challenges

Developing the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) library for the project’s Smart Connect products presented several technical and logistical challenges. One of the primary hurdles was ensuring compatibility across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and the Texas Instruments CC2541 BLE chip. Each platform required distinct development environments and integration methods, which complicated the standardization of the library’s functionality.

Another challenge was maintaining ultra-low power consumption in battery-operated devices while ensuring reliable communication. The Smart Connect products required precise and efficient power-saving mechanisms to prolong battery life without compromising performance. This necessitated rigorous testing and optimization of the BLE stack.

Security was also a critical concern. While the BLE protocol offered basic security measures, the project demanded a more robust solution to protect sensitive device data and ensure safe communication between the toys and mobile apps. Implementing a secure layer on top of the existing BLE protocol required custom development and careful synchronization of keys and credentials across devices.

Lastly, the project encountered scalability challenges as the product line gained success. The BLE library needed to support a growing ecosystem of Smart Connect products, each with its own unique features and requirements. Krasamo had to design an architecture that could accommodate future devices without requiring significant overhauls, ensuring that production cycles and costs remained manageable.

Solutions

To tackle the challenges faced in the project, the Krasamo team developed a custom Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) library specifically designed for the Smart Connect products. This solution featured a cross-platform architecture, allowing for seamless integration with iOS, Android, and the Texas Instruments CC2541 BLE chip. As a result, consistent performance and functionality were achieved across all supported platforms.

To enhance power efficiency, the team implemented advanced power-saving mechanisms within the BLE stack. These included adaptive communication protocols and low-power modes, which significantly extended battery life while ensuring reliable data transfer. The library underwent rigorous testing under various conditions to guarantee optimal performance.

Security measures were strengthened by adding an additional secure layer on top of the BLE protocol. This involved implementing native security libraries for each platform, which enabled the secure exchange of unique private keys during communication. The enhanced security measures ensured data integrity and protected user privacy.

To ensure the solution would remain relevant in the future, the BLE library was crafted with a modular and scalable architecture. This design allows for the easy addition of new Smart Connect devices with unique functionalities to the ecosystem. The library’s extensibility facilitates the quick onboarding of additional devices, ensuring that the Global Leader in Toy Innovation can continue to innovate without constraints.

The final product not only met the project’s technical and security requirements, but also delivered a superior user experience, solidifying the company’s position as an early IoT adopter and leader in connected toy and baby gear technology.
